Over the past three years, I've had 30+ sports-related apps on my phone. Strava, TrainingPeaks, WKO5, Golden Cheetah, Enduco, RunGap, SyncMyTracks — and here's what I learned: most of them overlap. Only a handful are truly essential.
So I did a clean-out — one app per category. Here's what I kept, and why.
Recording: Your Device's Native App
Whether you wear a Garmin, COROS, Huawei, or Suunto watch — or ride with a Garmin, Wahoo, iGPSport, Magene, Xingzhe, or Blackbird bike computer — your device's companion app is the best recording tool. Sensor pairing, real-time data display, firmware updates — things third-party apps can't and shouldn't try to replace. They're your data's first stop, not its final destination.
Sync: GarSync
Each category has a best-in-class app. But they don't talk to each other. How does Garmin Connect data reach Strava? How do Keep activities land in Intervals.icu? How does weight from a smart scale enter Garmin? — That's what GarSync does.
RunGap is iOS-only. SyncMyTracks is abandoned. FitnessSyncer is web-only. None of them support China-market platforms (Keep, Codoon, Xingzhe). GarSync covers iOS + Android + 35 platforms + FIT repair (coordinate correction, device ID rewriting) + NAS backup — no competitor matches this scope. That's its moat — not AI, not social, not ECG. It's sync.
Human Coach: TrainingPeaks
If you have a professional coach, TrainingPeaks is practically standard. Coaches publish workouts, you execute, data flows back. Its strength isn't the software — it's the coach ecosystem. No other platform matches the quantity and quality of coaches on TrainingPeaks. If you're self-coached, GarSync's AI coach works great too.
AI Coach: GarSync
Some people use generic AI tools for training analysis — export the FIT file, upload to a computer, write a prompt, wait for output. COROS users have it easier: the official MCP API lets them fetch their data from COROS servers. But other platforms aren't as convenient — you have to hunt down open-source projects and integrate each one manually. It works, but with one common barrier: too many steps, and it requires a computer and technical know-how. After every run: export, upload, prompt, wait — do that five times a week and you'll stop bothering.
GarSync's AI coach is one tap on your phone: open the app, tap AI Analysis, report generated. No file exports, no prompts, zero tech skills needed. And it integrates TSB (Training Stress Balance) curves and weight data — generic AI tools don't know your training load trend or weight changes from last week. GarSync does.
Beyond single-activity analysis, GarSync supports period reviews — weekly, monthly, yearly, or any custom date range. It pulls data across all your connected platforms into one review. Every analysis and review is auto-saved, so you can revisit and compare anytime — see how far you've come since three months ago.
Analysis: Intervals.icu
I started with TrainingPeaks for analysis, then switched to Intervals.icu because it's free and uncompromised. PMC charts (CTL/ATL/TSB), W' balance, custom metrics — functionally on par with TrainingPeaks, but completely free. The only downside: it's web-only, no native app.
Backup: GarSync → NAS
All raw FIT files one-tap backup to my home NAS. Platforms may shut down, APIs may change — but the data on your NAS is yours forever. It's the last line of defense, and the most reassuring one.
Health: Apple Health
Smart scale, blood pressure monitor, sleep tracker, nutrition app — they all write to Apple Health. It's the "United Nations" of iOS health data. You don't need to actively use it — it quietly aggregates everything in the background.
Share: Strava
No debate here. 100 million users, KOM segments, Kudos, clubs — the network effect is too strong. You finish a ride and naturally want to check your ranking. Everyone's there. Switching means leaving your social circle behind.
How They Work Together
Connector of Sports Ecosystem
My daily flow is simple:
- Head out with my Garmin → data auto-lands in Garmin Connect.
- Open GarSync, one-tap sync → data pushes to Strava (social) and Intervals.icu (analysis).
- Weight sync: Apple Health → GarSync → Garmin Connect — W/kg always based on current weight.
- All raw FIT files one-tap backup to my home NAS.
I'm not replacing everything with one app — I'm letting my recommended app in each category do its job. GarSync is the connector of the sports ecosystem.
